Translation and Interpreting Forum Olomouc 2022
Pre-conference workshop 3: The Role of Corpora in Translator Educations
November 10, 2022
Convenor: Ondřej Molnár, Ph.D.
Duration: 3 hours
Number of participants is limited.
In
the last decades corpus methods have grown in importance and nowadays
occupy a central position not only in linguistics, but also in
translation studies and translation research. Simplistically speaking,
corpus-based translation studies scholars in the past 30 years have
focused on: first, the search for typical features of translation and
interpreting, their similarities and differences (take, for example,
reduction-related and interference-related features of target texts);
second, translator style (his or her individual profile, i.e. his or
her characteristic use of language); third, translation education (the
collection and analysis of translation learner corpora and the use of
corpora in translation training).
In this context,
the workshop aims to bring together translation trainers from a number
of European universities to share experience and best practices -
primarily but not exclusively - in the area of corpus-based translation
training. The questions that may be discussed include, without
limitation:
• the use of corpora in translator/interpreter training
• what types of corpora can help translators?
• how to use corpora to enhance translation and revision practices
• the role of corpora in translation quality assessment
• machine translation, corpora and post-editing
The
workshop is conceived of as a “share and gain” forum offering room of
exchange. Therefore, participants are more than welcome to bring and
share any good texts or exercises they use to make the exchange even
more fruitful.
