Translation and Interpreting Forum Olomouc 2022
Pre-conference workshop 1: Legal Translation Training: What and How
November 9, 2022
Convenor: Ondřej Klabal, Ph.D. (Palacký University Olomouc)
Duration: 3 hours
Number of participants is limited.
More
than 10 years ago, Lucja Biel (2011, 165) called for “more exchange of
best practices” to “serve as a point of reference or benchmark for
legal translation teachers.“ Even though some progress has been
achieved, and the number of publications dealing with legal translation
training has increased, a lot of room for enhancing this exchange
remains.
In this context, the workshop aims to bring
together legal translation trainers from various European universities
to share experience and best practices in the area of legal translation
training. Even though the target and source language may differ,
translation of legal texts from and into English poses a number of
problems which exist irrespective of the specific language pair. The
questions that may be discussed include, without limitation:
• how much attention should be devoted to legal translation in a T&I curriculum
• how much thematic knowledge do translator trainees need and how to acquire it?
• how to select texts: what branches of law to cover, whether to recycle tried and tested texts, or innovate
• how to choose rich points in the text
• what exercises to use in addition to “translation proper” exercises
what
is the role of legal dictionaries in a legal translation classroomThe
workshop is conceived of as a “share and gain” forum offering room of
exchange. Therefore, participants are more than welcome to bring and
share any good texts or exercises they use to make the exchange even
more fruitful.
