Translation and Interpreting Forum Olomouc 2017

"Translating the Wor(l)d: Beyond Language"

November 10–11, 2017

Since 2011, when it was held for the first time, the Translation and Interpreting Forum Olomouc has established itself as an open platform which is not limited only to an academic exchange within translation and interpreting studies research but embraces discussion with all players in the field of cross-language communication (see archive for TIFO 2014, 2012 and 2011).

The 2017 conference theme "Translating the Wor(l)d: Beyond Language" reflects upon the fact that translation has become a major communication modality of the post-modern globalized world. The conference aims at mapping the landscape of this specific human activity by exploring the increasing complexity of language communication. The featured guest speakers for TIFO 2017 are Franz Pöchhacker (University of Vienna) and Aline Remael (University of Antwerp). Conference sections are suggested as follows:

● translator's and interpreter's role and ethics in global/local
   communication
● formative aspects of the profession: developing inclinations,
   aptitudes, and skills
● quality throughout the translation/interpreting process
● crossing language borders: a major challenge, or a source of
   inspiration?
● translation technology, its position, requirements, and benefits
● translating literature as a way to the knowledge of the world

We welcome BOTH papers presenting results of academic research AND contributions by professionals in the field. The invitation to participate is extended to all parties concerned: academics (teachers and students), professional translators and interpreters, trade organisations and professional institutions, publishing houses, agencies providing language services, "in-house" language departments of transnational corporations, companies developing support tools and technology, et cetera.

The list of speakers has been closed (preliminary programme here). Registration for non-presenting participants is still open. For further details see the registration form.

Selected papers are to be published in a peer-reviewed thematic volume, as a special issue of Czech and Slovak Linguistic Review journal. Publications from previous TIFO conferences are available here: 2014, 2012, 2011. See also OMLM Vol. 4 on TQA.

About us:

Translation courses have been taught at the Department of English and American studies for decades. In response to general demand for a specialized major in translation studies, a B.A. study programme English for Translation and Interpreting opened and accepted first students in 2007. Since then the M.A. programme has been accredited as well, opening for the first undergraduates in 2011. The Translation and Interpreting Section is a young team of academics seeking to train a new generation of professionals ready to answer the challenges of the translation and interpreting trade. Major support for building the new study programmes came from the EU grants. More...
